BioMedIA Lab

AI in medical image analysis

BioMedical Image Analysis (BioMedIA) lab is part of the computer vision department at MBZUAI. The main focus of the lab is to investigate real-world healthcare problems using Artificial Intelligence (AI). For instance, the lab focuses on problems such as

  • Fetal and maternal health
  • Quantification of lung infection in X-ray and CT scans
  • Assessment of Coronary Artery Disease
  • Neonatal health focusing on brain growth and chest infection
  • Affordable healthcare especially with using intelligent point of care ultrasound
  • Precision medicine and genomics
  • Natural language processing for health related problems such as speech impairment

From a technical perspective, the group aims to work on different health and care problems by studying different aspects such as

  • Self-supervised learning
  • Explainable machine learning methods
  • Federated learning
  • Robustness of deep learning algorithms and adversarial attacks/defense
  • NLP and multi-modal learning
  • Visual question answering

The group is led by Dr Mohammad Yaqub, a faculty member of MBZUAI. Dr. Yaqub's vision is to make the BioMedIA group at MBZUAI a world leading research centre focused on solving real-world health-related problems using AI. Students, research assistants, associates and fellows joining the BioMedIA group are expected to work on such problems to come up with novel solutions which could lead to

  • high tier publications
  • intellectual properties
  • publicly available code or datasets for some problems
  • prototypes
  • licensing agreements
  • industrial collaborations
